Wool felting was the topic of conversation this past weekend at the Goss Emporium. Bear Creek Design artist Teresa Perleberg taught a class in wool felting. Class participants created sculptures from wool using kits and instruction provided by Perleberg.

Dinosaur Adventure Arrives!

The dinosaurs have arrived and we are busily working to prepare the exhibit for the opening this Friday.

This amazing exhibit traces the history of the dinosaurs from their earliest appearance all the way to the last of the dinosaurs. The exhibit contains mounted skeletons assembled by the technicians who mounted all of the dinosaurs for the smithsonian.

Dinosaur Adventure consists of skeletons skulls, claws, eggs, and even fossilized dinosaur droppings.These pieces are gathered from over sixty of the world’s most important international museum collections.

There are even two baby dinosaur skeletons that were the first two ever discovered. Among the collection are teranosaurs, ceratopsians, brontosaurs, duck bill dinosaurs, pterosaurs and the earliest birds.

Marge Blaue from Sioux Falls sculpts the faces of each Santa individually so that each one is unique with its own personality! They are 24" to 48" tall.

Let the Christmas shopping begin!

Monday evening shoppers filled the Goss Emporium. Christmas music filled the air and shoppers filled their baskets. Local artisans were onhand to talk about their work and the process of creating the art they sell.

Artist Lisa Perleberg, displayed and demonstrated her sculptural felting skills for shoppers.

Doyle Dykes Concert a Huge Success!

On Saturday, November 21, world renouned guitarist Doyle Dykes said a prayer with the crowd to rededicate the Goss Opera Hall. Dykes was the first musician to play in the hall in over 70 years. He delighted and amazed the crowd with his musical talents and was joined by his daughter Haley, who sang and played the mandolin. During the concert Dykes also told stories about his life and time working with "Grandpa Jones" and on the Grand Ole Opry. The crowd responded with a standing ovation more than once.

Scrapbooking with Heidi Swapp

Well-known scrap-booker, Heidi Swapp, taught one of her new "Inspiration Sessions" this weekend at the Goss. This unique series of classes is designed to teach new ideas, techniques and possibilities.

Heidi brings with her an extensive knowledge of scrap-booking, designing product, manufacturing, digital and hybrid possibilities as well as a tremendous passion for this stuff!

Second City Performance

The Second City performance was the first ticketed event held at the Goss Opera House in over 70 years. The Goss Opera House is now renovated and open for hosting entertainment and special events.

An Evening with Robert Upham & Friends

On October 21st, people gathered at the Goss for an evening of food and entertainment.
The evening began with a traditional Native American dinner served in the Goss Gallery. Artist, Robert Upham's art lined the walls.

The evening's entertainment included Brian Wilson - Blues, Doug Meserberg - Country, and Thomas Evans performed magic tricks.

The evening concluded with a dance troupe performing traditional dances.

Big Find in the Opera Hall

Big Find in Opera Hall

The Goss Opera Hall is filled with painting and stenciling. Some of the stenciling was damaged due to water leakage during the many years the opera hall was not in use. During recent restoration workers were surprised to find a second pattern under the one currently visible. Workers who were sanding a damaged area noticed a different pattern and color appearing and carefully worked to bring it into focus.

It was known that the opera hall received a makeover circa 1907 but no interior photos of the hall have been found. The green scroll is believed to be the original artwork from when the building was built in 1889 and the Pied Piper, from the update in 1907.

Workers are able to easily work on the ceiling and high walls standing on a three story temporary scafolding that fills the opera hall.
